Many congratulations to Olga Tokarczuk and Jennifer Croft, who won the Man Booker International Prize 2018 this month! In Flights, published by Fitzcarraldo Editions, Tokarczuk meditates on travel and human anatomy, moving between stories including the Dutch anatomist who discovered the Achilles tendon when dissecting his own amputated leg and the tale of Chopin’s heart as his sister transported it from Paris to Warsaw.
After months of build-up since the longlist was announced in March, the great and the good from the international literary scene enjoyed a champagne reception in the garden, followed by dinner for 270 guests in the stunning Raphael Gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Four Culture managed the event, organising the media and digital activity around it as well. Alongside global coverage of the news announcement, including prominent broadcast slots on BBC World News and the World Service, plus pieces in the Daily Telegraph and The Guardian, we also placed several brilliant feature pieces – read a plethora of untranslatable words from the nominated translators on Mental Floss or test your mettle with our idioms quiz in The Guardian.
The team filmed the event live, and produced six shortlist videos and an announcement video, seeing a staggering increase viewers of our Facebook Livestream less than 24 hours after the announcement – with 46k views compared to 5.6k in 2017. The winner announcement video has had over 109k views, while the Man Booker Instagram Stories had 16k views on the day and we’ve had thousands of listens to the first two MBI 2018 podcasts. The news was shared by retailers on all of their channels and by the Reading Agency with libraries across the country. Listen to the winner podcast now on SoundCloud and iTunes.
